How to Pray
July 5, 2008
WITH LOVE – Matthew 5:44 “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Luke 6:28 “bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”
WITH HUMILITY – Matthew 6:6 “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Luke 18:10-14 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men–robbers, evildoers, adulterers–or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
WITHOUT BABBLING – Matthew 6:7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
WITH ALERTNESS – Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” Luke 22:46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
WITH FRIENDS – Luke 9:28 “About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.”
WITH THE SPIRIT’S HELP – Romans 8:26 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” 1 Corinthians 14:15 “So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. Ephesians 6:18 “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”
WITH JOY – Philippians 1:4 “In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.”
WITH CONSISTENCY – Acts 1:14 “They all joined together constantly in prayer,” Romans 12:12 “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 “pray continually.”

THE LORD’S PRAYER
“This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:9-13
Put yourself in the place of a Bible person and write what you believe would have been his or her prayer.
